Iron infusions

When iron levels are low the body will suffer energy depletion. Low iron can cause susceptibility to infection.

Iron is the most important molecule in the makeup of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen to tissue. Iron deficiency can cause anaemia. When iron deficiency anaemia is present, one needs to ascertain the cause of low iron before treating the deficiency. Iron deficiency is common in young women and malnourished children.

Deficiency symptoms may include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, poor appetite, headaches, cold hands and feet and repeated infections. An iron infusion is used in iron deficiency when oral supplements do not work.

Iron infusions have traditionally been performed in hospital because of the potential for reactions to the procedure. However, given in smaller dosages, a series of iron infusions can safely be performed in an outpatient situation.

A doctors referral is required for iron infusions.
